 Welcome to Baringa School Website

Baringa School is located in Moe, which is in the Latrobe Valley. The school provides a comprehensive educational program for students who have an intellectual disability aged from 5 to 18 years of age.

In addition to having an intellectual disability, students may have associated disabilities and syndromes such as Down Syndrome, Epilepsy, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Hearing Impairments, Fragile X, Acquired Brain Injury, as well as communication disorders such as Dyspraxia. Some students also have associated behavior disorders such as Conduct Disorder.

Baringa School is committed to excellence in Special Education.We aim to provide an innovative, caring and stimulating environment where learning is relevant and purposeful and where students develop a sense of belonging through mutual respect and cooperation.

The student population is drawn from a wide geographical area incorporating Trafalgar, Yallourn North, Newborough, Moe, Churchill, Yinnar, Hazelwood, Traralgon, Glengarry, and Toongabbie. Transport is provided by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

Eligibility

In order to access the school students must meet the eligibility criteria for Mild Intellectual Disability (Full Scale IQ between 50 and 70 and Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Score below 70) and be on the Statewide Program for Students with Disabilities (PSD Program). For new prep enrolments, Baringa School assists with coordinating this process. For all other students, the child’s mainstream school coordinates this process.

Guiding Principles

Baringa School community sees the provision of a safe, caring and positive learning environment as its most important goal.

The environment aims to support students as they strive to develop social, emotional, communication and educational skills that will lead to independence. School community commitment to providing a curriculum that challenges student learning through achievement and success is strong. 

Facilities

The school has extensive outdoor space including a basketball court, asphalt games area, junior and senior playground areas, a large oval and several quiet activity areas. Two sets of climbing and play equipment are available; with play equipment for younger students is in a safely fenced area. Extensive shading structures have enhanced playground areas.

Baringa Homestead located at Childers, was established by Friends of Baringa as a school camp some years ago. The Homestead is used extensively for school based Outdoor Education and camp activities.

Four mini buses owned by the school are used to access off campus learning environments. In addition, the school makes extensive use of community facilities and services such as public transport, businesses and other work locations for work experience placements.
